The 5 Unsung Games of E3 2008

Has the constant chatter about Gears of War 2, Fallout 3, and Spore reached critical mass for you? Us too. Here are five games that quietly caught our bloodshot eyes at last week's E3.

Wanted (Warner Bros. Interactive; PS3, 360) (2008)

Yes, it's another video game based on a movie based on a comic book. But before you head for the parking lot, know this: the game is actually looking like nine kinds of awesome. The level that we saw last week featured a shootout aboard an airborn 747. True to the source material, you can curve bullets from coach to business class to take down enemies. Better yet: shoot out a nearby hatch, and watch said enemies get sucked out into the wild, blue yonder. ("Write if you get worrrrrk!") Wanted is produced by Pete Wanat, a.k.a. the man who not only made the awesome Chronicles of Riddick game, he's also the guy responsible for saving the Scarface game from totally sucking.

PlayStation Portable ID: Don't Call It a Gamertag

No matter what Sony wants to call 2008, it will probably be called "the year the PSN caught up to Xbox Live." Further adding to the storyline is the unveiling of the new portable ID card, allowing PS2, PS3, and PlayStation.com users to link their accounts into one global username. (XBox 360 users call them gamertags, but let's not get too hung up with semantics here.) Anyway, behold:

The empty space underneath the username is where your profile information goes (up to 21 characters). Mine, obviously, is blank. Here's to hoping for PS3 Trophies to make an appearance somewhere on the ID in the future and/or the ability to customize the appearance.

If you haven't linked up your profiles yet, get going already: http://www.us.playstation.com/MyAccount

Five Things We Can't Wait For From Sony in 2008

The PlayStation 3 came into this world as a sort of laughingstock, afflicted with both the then unpopular Blu-ray infrastructure and the then unneeded high-definition capablities. Two years later, Blu-ray has won the media war with HD-DVD and more and more consumers are snatching up HDTVs. Sony spent much of their E3 presentation giving a sort of polite, "I told you so" and boasting how it's system is futureproof. With games like Resistance 2 and LittleBigPlanet, a new video download service, and a growing install base, it's hard to argue against them. With that said, the highlights:

GOD OF WAR III ANNOUNCEMENT We all knew it was coming, with rumors and speculation flying all over the Internet for the past 4 months. Sony confirmed the arrival of Kratos on the PlayStation 3 with a teaser trailer that didn't really show much. Nevertheless, expect the godkiller to arrive sometime between next summer and Christmas.

Four Things We Don't Want From Nintendo in 2008

Being top dog often means getting lazy, sloppy, maybe not strive for the prize, so to speak. That's our reaction after Nintendo's lackluster showing at E3 this year. While the Wii is selling like hotcakes (200K a week, 700K monthly), it's the software that eventually makes the day. Unfortunately, we're in for some pretty crappy days. The lowlights (or if you prefer, the highlights):

WII MOTION PLUS Here's what Nintendo's announcement of a WiiMote attachment should've sounded like: "Hey, our original controller kinda sucked, so here's more add-ons to maybe make it better. No it won't be free—you have to buy our other games to get it."
