It's Draft Day in the NBA, but there's lots going on other than meenie-miney-moeing the top b-ball players in the country. 2K Sports invited us to the Magic Johnson Theatre in Harlem, NY for the premiere of
Gunnin' For That #1 Spot directed by Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys fame. The documentary follows eight of the top-ranked high schoolers in the country, including probable top-10 picks Michael Beasley, Kevin Love, and Jerryd Bayless, as they are selected and flown to Harlem's Rucker Park to play in the inaugural “Elite 24” all-star game.
"It’s great to partner with Adam Yauch, along with the top high school basketball players in the nation, to debut this amazing documentary for dedicated basketball fans everywhere," said Jason Argent, VP of Marketing at 2K Sports. "We pride ourselves in making the most exciting and authentic games available, and
Gunnin' For That #1 Spot gets to the heart and soul of hoops in the same manner we approach our top rated
NBA 2K franchise and 2K Sports titles."
Yauch's first theatrical effort since
Awesome; I Fuckin' Shot That! was, at the very least, more thorough than any biopic segment attempt you'll find on ESPN. He travelled to each players' hometown and interviewed family members, friends, and neighbors in trying to depict the different environments the draftees grew up in. Supporting the film's visuals were narratives provided by DJ, editor, and streetballer Bobbito Garcia and a head-bopping soundtrack mixing hip-hop, jazz and break beats.
If that all sounds good to you, the film debuts tomorrow at
select theaters across the country, so check it out.
