  • Impulse Buy: Top-Flite D2 Golf Ball

    top_flite_d2_blog.jpg

Golf season is just getting underway for most of the country so it's understandable if your swing isn't in perfect shape at the moment. But with equipment getting better every year, you're running out of excuses to keep shooting 140 every weekend. Top-Flite's newest line of balls uses "Dimple in Dimple aerodynamics" to provide lots of control and even more distance. Choose from Distance, Control or Straight (it helps you tame the banana-like slice you've been battling since high school) and swing away. They're so sure that it's the longest ball around that they sent out a group of fans to the par-5 16th hole the TPC Sawgrass to taunt pros at The Players who chose to lay up rather than go for the green in two. Their shirts said "C'mon, Man Up," and, "Never Lay Up," which are good thoughts to keep in mind next time you hit the course. Because if you get to the green in two, it'll be a lot less embarrassing when you have to putt six times.

  • Review: Nomis Glove FG Football Boots (That Means Soccer Cleats)

    nomis_450x338.JPG

The last time I got a new pair of soccer cleats I tore my left ACL half an hour into the first match in which I used them.  So after some trepidation and a karmic gut-check I went out in search of grass in Manhattan upon which to trudge and test Nomis' football boots (henceforth "soccer/cleats" shall be referred to as "football/boots"). Finding grass to play on in Manhattan is not a straightforward proposition - Central park pick-ups games don't allow studs and most soccer fields use artificial turf. Eventually I made my way to the western extremity of the island to Riverbank State Park on the Hudson and discovered a large uneven muddy patch. Not much unlike Wigan Athletic's pitch.

  • Nanotechnology Can Help You Go to Space, Win the Masters

    epic_shaft_mind_out_of_gutt.jpg

The word nanotechnology gets thrown around a lot these days, but I wasn't quite ready to see it in the description of a piece of golf equipment. A company called Grafalloy teamed up with PowerMetal Technologies (they have nothing to do with Iron Maiden, I checked) to create the EPIC golf shaft. It uses, and get ready for it, molecular nano-crystalline metals to make it a lot lighter and stronger than the graphite currently holding your driver together. It sounds wacky, but apparently it works, since Trevor Immelman rocked one all the way to the green jacket yesterday at The Masters. As expensive as it sounds, the shafts are actually available to the average Joe for only $135 at their website. You're going to have to shell out some extra dough to get a grip and head attached to it, but it might be worth it if only so you can say, "Hey buddy, can you pass me my driver with the molecular nano-crystalline metal shaft? Thanks."

  • 4 Drivers to Make You Less Sucky at Golf

The Masters is in full effect (aren't you proud of me for not saying "swing?") which means next weekend, tons of schlubs—myself included—will be jonesing to get out on the course. But golf is hard. Luckily these high tech big dogs are making the game a little easier for the guys that putt for dough and drive for d'oh!

    TaylorMade Tour TP Burner $399
Fangy golf talk: Weighted power-base, SuperFast Technology for increased swing speed
This 450cc stick is engineered to help the average joe get the same kind of pop off the tee that the pros get. It's done through a combination of a big-ass head and a perfectly placed center of gravity. The titanium face also makes for incredible feel, especially on a soft ball, and one of the manliest impact sounds around.

  • Ivanka Trump Talks Golf With the Donald at the Callaway Girls Club Event

To celebrate the release of their new Big Bertha clubs, which are engineered specifically for the lady's game, Callaway threw a little shindig on the West Side of Manhattan. It was a pretty good deal for me since I ate fancy appetizers in a room full of golf-loving ladies, then got a chance to talk to Ivanka one on one (video is above). And even though the clubs aren't made for guys like me (or guys at all for that matter) it's obvious that a lot of research went into making them easy to hit. There are some big images of the Big Bertha womens' irons and driver as well as their new Gems clubs after the link. If you think they're cool enough to get your girl out on the course with you, check out Callawaygolf.com for more info.
