Be Afraid: The Creepy Clown Trend Is Making a Comeback

Is a Wisconsin suburb on the verge of an all-out clown war?

If you see an eerie clown wandering alone, aimlessly on your street in Waukesha, Wisconsin, he is probably not the notorious registered sex offender “Silly the Clown,” who moved to town a few years back. So please don’t be alarmed if you see a menacing white-faced clown in a white costume, or an unnerving orange-haired man in a green jumpsuit frightening everyone. According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, there have been numerous reports of such nut-jobs startling Waukesha residents.  These clowns may be nearly as creepy as John Wayne Gacy, but they appear to be harmless teenage weirdos who have been dressing up in riotous outfits, hoping to get a rise out of the people of Waukesha. Waukesha police are helpless to defeat the scourge, noting that this is “odd behavior…but it’s not illegal behavior.”

So if it’s not technically illegal to dress like a deranged clown and stand on street corners terrifying people, then we don’t have a problem, right? Not so fast. When a similar trend started freaking people out in France last year, armed groups of “Clown Hunters” organized a full-fledged “anti-clown resistance” equipped with tear-gas, batons, baseball bats and brass knuckles. The French police arrested the resistance leaders and warned both “aggressive clowns” and “Clown Hunters” that they take clown business very seriously.  So if the new crop of American clown pranksters don’t watch themselves, they could incite another all-out war among armed resistance groups, clowns and police. Vive la résistance!
