Man Down! Jason Sudeikis is Leaving “Saturday Night Live”

After a decade on the show, the funnyman is the latest SNL cast member to call it quits.

In his two years as a writer and eight seasons as a cast-member on Saturday Night Live, Jason Sudeikis has played a hyper-energetic backup dancer, an A-hole, a New England judge with a thick Cajun accent, the Devil and Jesus Christ himself. His impressions have included Joe Biden, Mitt Romney, Donald Trump, and David Letterman – and it was on Dave’s Late Show  couch that Sudeikis announced he was leaving SNL for good for last.

“I’m definitely done,” he told Letterman. “Yeah, I’m going to leave. I’m not coming back next season.”

“I’ll probably start to get that itch in August, where all these sketch ideas with show up, and I’ll be like, ‘Well, can I make this sketch idea last 90 minutes and make it into a movie?’ Probably not.”

The news of his departure comes in the wake of a late-night exodus that has seen such heavyhitters as Kristen Wiig, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, and Fred Armisen leave the show in within the span of a year; and head writer/Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers is also on his way out, as he takes over Jimmy Fallon’s Late Night hosting duties in January. Sounds like Lorne Michaels has his work cut out for him.

But given the way Sudeikis’ movie career has taken off, the decision hardly comes as a surprise. Next month the actor’s latest movie, We’re the Millers, hits theaters, and it’s the kind role of that could see Sudeikis stake his claim as this generation’s Chevy Chase…well, if Chevy Chase wasn’t a total asshole. It’s like if National Lampoon’s Vacation met There’s Something About Mary, and they had a movie baby. And then, meanwhile, The Hangover and Pineapple Express met and had a movie baby. And if, by some miracle, those two movie babies met and fucked, We’re the Millers would be the shit that they birthed. In other words, it’s pants-wettingly hilarious.

Talking to Maxim recently, Sudeikis had yet to make up his mind in regards to SNL, saying he still needed to talk things through with Michaels. He did, however, talk about going to his first SNL taping as a kid when his uncle, actor George Wendt, hosted, and he described what a grind life on the show could be for a cast-member.

“It’s almost like we’ve been waxing the car and painting the fence at SNL, and when you go into other jobs, and you don’t realize how fast you can do it,” Sudeikis told us. “We don’t realize it, because we don’t have the time to pat ourselves on the back. It’s just on to the next sketch. We create, we destroy, we judge ourselves and devalue ourselves, and just try to keep our heads up and keep looking forward.”
