Every week, we send someone stumbling into the dark Maxim archives to see what we were up to way back when. This week we're going back to August of 2003, when we were
tennis Anna Kournikova fanatics, David Schwimmer was still relevant, and we shamelessly watched The Simple Life.
Cover Girl: Anna Kournikova
Where You've Seen Her: On the courts, of course! This Russian bombshell came out swinging - literally - in 1997 during her Wimbledon debut, becoming the second woman in the Open Era to reach the semifinals. After the world finally realized what a babe she was, Anna ran into Enrique Iglesias, got hot and heavy in a staged club bathroom, and stuck with him for 10 years. Because of that, we've tattooed massive moles onto our faces, in hopes of finding similar results.
Where She Is Now: Professionally, Anna took a seven year hiatus from tennis, but managed to come back to tear up the court with former doubles partner Martina Hingis in 2010. After that she had a brief stint on the Biggest Loser as a trainer and continues to show off some tennis skills at charity events. Rumors have recently been flying that Anna and Enrique are doomed to holy matrimony. Whether or not it's true, we still managed to squeeze out a heartfelt tear.
Tabloids are everyone's guilty pleasure, but the subjects don't usually have much staying power. Most of the celebs who we deemed tabloid-worthy in this feature are mostly out of the spotlight (David Schwimmer, Darryl Strawberry), though still famous (Eddie Murphy, Catherine Zeta-Jones). But, predictably, good old Arnie has managed to defy the laws of time, and is still an active target of the press.
Girls Gone Wild Kingdom
Who could possibly watch a show revolving around a socialite duo wreaking havoc on America's "simpler," hay-ridden parts? Us, and the rest of America in 2003. Post-Rick Saloman and pre-Joel Madden (and when the friends were actually still friends), Paris and Nicole would travel throughout the United States to experience how the rest of America lived. (And by "rest of America," we mean people who didn't grow up the daughter of rock royalty or living at the Waldorf-Astoria.) Since then, Nicole has moved on from her wildchild roots to a new role as wife, mother, and fashion icon, while Paris still makes news for...whatever it is that Paris makes news for.
