Throwback Thursday: September 2002 – Lucy Liu

Check out what we were up to in September of ’02. Don’t worry, we’ll leave out our middle school class picture.

Every week, we send someone stumbling into the dark Maxim archives to see what we were up to way back when. This week we’re going back to September of 2002, when Lucy Liu was one of Charlie’s Angels, you couldn’t escape Phantom Planet’s single, “California,” and we were looking for the best cream-filled desserts (which isn’t as dirty as it sounds).

Cover Girl: Lucy Liu

Where You’ve Seen Her: We were first introduced to Lucy Liu in the late ’90s on Ally McBeal. After a four-year stint on the TV series, the native New Yorker transitioned to the big screen with a smattering of films. But it was her role as Alex Munday, the brainy member of the Charlie’s Angels trio, that really had us going crazy. And once we saw her unforgettable turn in Kill Bill, we were officially fans for life.

Where She Is Now: Now 45, Lucy is looking better than ever, and starring on the popular TV series Elementary, in which she playsDr. Joan Watson, Sherlock Holmes’ modern-day sidekick. We’ve never been more eager for a one-on-one interrogation.

Featuring:

Phantom Planet

Back in 2002, “California” – the theme song from teen soap opera The OC – could be heard everywhere. Apparently the band had several other popular singles, including “Do The Panic” and “Dropped,” but nothing that struck the same chord with the public as their ode to the Golden State. After releasing an album in 2008, the group went on an unofficial hiatus from which they have never really returned. It might have had something to do with the departure of drummer/songwriter/actor Jason Schwartzman, who left the band in 2003. But if it means less teenybopper music in our lives, we know better than to ask questions.

Sweet Creams

Looking back, we find this article disturbing for multiple reasons: That we once ate a low-fat popsicle on purpose, that a dozen Krispy Kremes was practically free at only $6.50, and that someone actually had the audacity to manufacture cream-stuffed sausage and not send us a lifetime supply. But at least we’ve been spared a fate worse than death with the recent rebirth of Twinkies, which are back on shelves after what can only be described as a horrifying period last year when it seemed they were being discontinued. Finally, someone’s looking out for us.
