Liam Neeson to Play General MacArthur in South Korea War Film
The action star is bringing his very particular set of skills to Korean cinema.
Liam Neeson, everyone’s favorite vengeful father, is set to play legendary Korean War hero General Douglas MacArthur in a South Korean war thriller, The Hollywood Reporterreports.
Neeson, who’s been enjoying a career as an unlikely action star after waging a one-man war on Paris’ Albanian émigré population in 2008’s Taken, is teaming up with Korean director John H. Lee for Operation Cromartie, a historical drama about the Battle of Incheon, an infamous surprise attack which took place shortly after the Korean War broke out on June 25, 1950.
According to THR, the film will follow eight heroes through the surprise attack by U.N. forces against North Korean soldiers in the occupied city of Incheon, an early turning point in the conflict.
For those of you who don’t know, General MacArthur is one of the most badass commanders in U.S. military history. The former Chief of Staff in the U.S. Army in the 1930s and commander of the armed forces in the Pacific theater during World War II, the highly-decorated MacArthur was one of only five men ever to rise to the rank of General of the Army along with future president Dwight D. Eisenhower. It’s no wonder that Taewon Entertainment, which is producing the film, wants stonefaced Neeson to portray him.
The film, based on a script by Lee Man-hee (the man behind the 2010 Korean War flick 71: Into the Fire) is expected to be released on June 2015, 2016, the anniversary of war’s start. While Taewon Entertainment hasn’t cast any of the staring Korean roles yet, we can already expect to see a lot of this in Operation Cromartie:
