It’s been a rough 2013 for the Carnival Cruise line, what with the infamous “Poop Cruise” that left thousands of passengers wallowing in their own filth for four days in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. Recent news is even worse…at least if you went to high school in the nineties. Yesterday it was announced that Carnival’s Mark McGrath & Friends Cruise was canceled, depriving literally dozens of fans the pleasure of battling seasickness and earsickness at the same time. The tour, which was scheduled to depart in October, had a lineup that would have maybe possibly (probably not) seemed awesome… in 1998: McGrath’s own Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, Gin Blossoms, Cracker, Spin Doctors, Vertical Horizon, the Verve Pipe, Marcy Playground, and “special acoustic performances” with Ed Roland of Collective Soul AND Ed Kowalczyk of Live. Special Ed performances!

So, sadly, you won’t be able to hear a live (not Live) performance of “Lightning Crashes” while playing shuffleboard. On the other hand, you’ll be saving yourself $649. On his twitter, McGrath apologized to fans: My apologies, I’m really bummed as well. . . That poop cruise did us no favors.

Because poop cruise aside, this was a genius business proposition.
