The 5th Dimension’s 1969 hippie anthem “Age of Aquarius” croons about a dawning and quite groovy era when peace guides the planets and love steers the stars. The Avengers: Age of Ultron, despite any syntactical similarities, has nothing to do with that patchouli-scented utopia. It’s less peace and love, more punches and lacerations. The good guys are all here - Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, The Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver - each with his or her signature moves (the Hulk continues to suffer from a temper, etc.), but even such a show of benevolent force is barely a match for towering, evil Ultron. We’d be surprised if the good guys didn’t win in the end, but footage of Captain America’s broken unbreakable shield keeps us wondering.
The Age of Ultron is very much not the Age of Aquarius.
