In what they call an “NFL Bombshell” today’s New York Post reports that The Dolphin great — who will be covering the Super Bowl for CBS this weekend — had an affair with one of the network’s production assistants, and got a daughter out of it. Marino, who joined CBS as a pregame analyst in 2003, apparently went deep with Donna Savattere, who gave birth to the couple’s daughter Chloe in 2005. In a statement, Marino acknowledged his paternity:

“This is a personal and private matter. I take full responsibility both personally and financially for my actions now as I did then,” he told The Post in a written statement. “We mutually agreed to keep our arrangement private to protect all parties involved.”

The Post reports that Marino paid off Savaterre to the tune of millions of dollars to keep the affair on the down-low. According to the story, “It’s not clear exactly how much Marino paid. But after getting the dough, Savattere apparently started living large.

She soon returned to New York from the Lone Star State, splitting her time between the Upper West Side and the Hamptons, where she became a fixture on the social scene.”

Okay, now we get that Marino has a pretty clean image – he and his wife have been married for 28 years, and have six children — but a pro athlete having an affair isn’t exactly a “bombshell.” And this scandal doesn’t even include dick pics, foot fetishes, or imaginary dead girlfriends. Maybe we’ve just come to expect too much from our fallen idols.
