In scoring 50 and 40 points in the last two games – and leading the New York Knicks to their tenth straight win — Carmelo Anthony has been riding a hot streak of Lebronian proportions. And in doing so, he’s moved within a hair of overtaking Kevin Durant for the NBA scoring lead with just eight games left in the season. It’s no surprise that Melo can shoot the rock — he’s one of the best scoring machines of his generation — but he’s never won the title, having been trumped by the likes of Kobe Bryant (’05-’06, ’06-’07),  Lebron James (’07-08), Dwyane Wade (’08-’09), and Kevin Durant, who won the last three. (The last player to win three scoring titles in a row? Michael Jordan.) And given Durant’s youth and continued stellar play, it was starting to look like Melo would be forever the bridesmaid, never the bride.

Scoring 90 points in two games (on 66% shooting, no less), has changed that. As of today, Durant’s sitting at 28.3 points per game, Melo at 28.1. While last night’s game wasn’t quite as impressive as Tuesday’s 50-point outing against the Heat, Melo still played like the guy fans have always hoped he could be, and he’s doing it when it counts. The Knicks are currently seeded second in the East, and need only two victories to rack up 50 for the first time in over a decade. There are a lot of things going right for the Knicks — J.R. Smith’s hot hand off the bench, Tyson Chandler back from his injury, Kenyon Martin looking like his old self, no Amar’e — but the biggest reason is clearly Melo. Now, if only he can carry this hot streak into the post-season. For the Knicks’ sake, he’d better.
