Meet the Lucky Man Going to the Marine Ball With Ronda Rousey

“The ball is going to be crazy,”

Lance Cpl. Jarrod Haschert’s phone has been blowing up for days. The the 22-year-old Marine and ambitious little cad posted a Facebook video asking Ronda Rousey to the Marine Ball a couple weeks back and after much fraught anticipation got his answer on Tuesday. She said yes. Now Haschert is the most famous Marine at Camp Lejeune, N.C.

He’s also the most excited. The Washington Postcaught up with the 22-year-old this week to talk about how it feels to have his dream girl not only accept his invitation, but admit that he’s cute. “When it happened, I didn’t know how to contain myself,”  he said.

Now that the initial shock has worn off, Haschert is day dreaming about how he and Rousey will get to know each other. “I was hoping we could spend some time during the day together to just talk and hang out or whatever,” he said. Sounds as if his intentions are noble, and they better be: we’ve already seen this week what an MMA fighter will do to guy who disrespects her.

If there’s a downside to all the attention Haschert’s got for his invitation, it’s all the attention he’s gotten for the invitation. “The ball is going to be crazy,” he said, referring to the eyeballs that are going to be trained on his date. It’s going to be hard enough for him to get some alone time with Rousey without hundreds of other Marines shouldering their way in for selfies. But even if he doesn’t make it to first base with Rousey, he can at least feel good about making it farther than Turtle.
