Why in the World Would The Texans Want Ryan Mallett?

We investigate. And find absolutely no answers.

Sucking at an elite level has its perks. Well, more like its perk; having the pick du jour at the NFL draft. And last season, the Texans earned every bit of that right. They also struggled under center, employing Matt Schaub, Case Keenum, and T.J. Yates at different points in the season – not exactly a murderer’s row of QBs. The upcoming draft is quarterback-heavy, with every style imaginable coming out of college, yet rumors are kicking around that the Texans may be trying to acquire…Ryan Mallett?

The Pats backup is in the last year of his rookie contract, so it’s the last chance for the organization to squeeze some value from the ex-Arkansas QB. But there is no earthly reason for the Texans to expend what’s been rumored to be a second-round pick when they have multiple – completely viable – options right in front of them. The only possible excuse is that the team wants all the press of taking a name like Jadeveon Clowney with the first overall pick (not that he’s just a name). As much fun as it is to imagine a defensive line with J.J. Watt and Clowney together, the Texans’ true need is for some backup for Arian Foster and some points on the board.

No one truly knows what the Texans are planning with all the freedom they have, what with being on the clock right. Hey, it’s not like the Texans ever blew it in this position, right?
