Today, studio A24 released a teaser trailer for its latest feature, a documentary about the late Amy Winehouse, the singer and accidental media sensation whose appetite for substance-induced self-destruction was surpassed only by her talent. The trailer opens and closes with several quiet bars of one of Winehouse’s biggest hits—“Back to Black”—a song about emotional hardships sandwiched between career highs. Because, for all the tabloid attention and public struggles with addiction, Amy Winehouse was first and foremost a soul singer and a writer whose lyrics were pure, 21st century blues lines about lost love, bad business, and quick sex. Wherever she is, we hope there’s adequate hairspray and a good guitar.
The upcoming Amy Winehouse documentary is about as dark as its subject.
