Throwback Thursday: June 1999

Every week, we send someone stumbling into the dark Maxim archives to see what we were up to way back when. This week we're going back to June of '99, when we were in love with Shannen Doherty's bad girl reputation, robot dogs were the new (and improved) real dogs, and we aspired to look like LL Cool J.

Cover Girl: Shannen Doherty

Where You've Seen Her: In the late '90s Shannen was known as the bad girl of Hollywood, playing one of three hot sister witches on the TV show Charmed. She had previously gained notoriety playing a mean girl in the '80s cult classic Heathers, a popular teen on Beverly Hills, 90210, and a hot psychologist in the thriller Almost Dead.

Where She Is Now: Shannon has managed to maintain her impeccable aesthetics, but sadly hasn't been as prolific as she used to be, instead making sporadic appearances in films such as the indie flick Burning Palms, revisiting her Beverly Hills roots in the modern-day reboot of 90210, and appearing in several TV movies. And sure, she may have gotten into a few altercations with producersex-wives, and fellow movie stars, but we still have a soft spot for her regardless.

Featuring:

RoboDog
As if our love for beepers and bulky satellite dishes wasn't embarrassing enough, our enchantment with robotic dogs seemed to skyrocket in the late '90s - a nostalgic tidbit we had fortunately forgotten until we came across this article. Tossing aside our Black Labs and Cavalier King Charles' (what? they're adorable!), we opted for a more cold, mechanical canine that promised to be quiet and refrain from shitting on our carpet. Plus they came equipped with spy cameras and various microphones, just like James Bond. The kicker? They cost a hefty $2,500, which is more than any real dog we've ever seen. And they couldn't even help us pick up girls, rendering them completely useless.

Lidsville

These floppy bucket hats reminiscent of every LL Cool J appearance during the decade were apparently deemed "cool" by our predecessors. If by "cool" they mean "constipated-looking yuppie channeling their inner rap star," then we wholeheartedly agree.
