The insatiable appetite for royal wedding minutiae got us thinking: Did we miss the official royal bachelor party? And is anyone taking bets on a date for the royal divorce yet? Below, a quick guide to some of history’s most regal sex scandals--from Caligula to Prince William’s dad!
Caligula- Insane, sadistic, and megalomaniacal, the Roman Emperor set the bar high for all future pervs: He is said to have slept with his sisters, pimped them out to other Romans, hosted mass orgies in the palace--and to have slept with men’s wives just to brag about it later. He shot to wide fame after the release of the sexually explicit 1979 biopic Caligula--partially financed by Penthouse Magazine.
Prince Andrew- You gotta love a man who knows his relationships are going to be scrutinized by the world and yet still decides it’s ok to date an erotic film actress (Kelsey Grammer did the same thing with his ex-wife, Playboy model Camille Donatacci). Koo Stark (nee Kathleen Dee-Anne Stark) appeared in the 1976 film Emily--among other movies--and started dating Andrew in the early 1980s. Her girl-on-girl shower scene spawned many a royal fantasy. Andy got high-fives for the rest of his life.
Prince Charles- The dude with the world’s most famous hot wife (Lady Diana) couldn’t keep his hands off ex-girlfriend Camilla Parker Bowles (now his wife and also known as Princess of Wales, Duchess of Cornwall, and Duchess of Rothesay). Di was famous for saying that "there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded." The affair is said to have lasted 25 years--Charles and Camilla met in 1970 and were married in 2005. The scandal has its own name: “Camillagate.” Di had her own name for Camilla: “Rottweiler.”
King Carl Gustaf- According to the 2010 book The Reluctant Monarch, the king of Sweden--a man married 34 years to Queen Silvia--indulged in sex parties thrown by mafia cronies, loved strip clubs, and entertained young ladies in his Jacuzzis. Rumor has it that he was also schtupping Swedish singer Camilla Henemark. Funny, he doesn’t sound that reluctant to us.
Catherine the Great - If you’re like most men, you know this Great Cate, empress of Russia, for one thing and one thing only: The lady’s libido was so large she supposedly died while attempting to have sex with a well-endowed Mr. Ed. Sorry, horse fans: This scandal is royal fiction. Catherine died of far more natural causes in 1796 with nary a sign of, uh, sinful horseplay.
