The words “Canada” and “rapper” don’t exactly jibe, but we’ll temper our skepticism for the London, Ontario, based rhyme-smith Shad. Why? Because of the crayola-colored, low-budget video for his track, “The Old Prince Still Lives at Home”—a gleeful scene-by-scene recreation of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’s opening sequence. (The single comes off Shad's sophomore album The Old Prince, out now on Black Box records.) Directed by a dude bearing the unfortunate name of Hot Dog Garbage, the clip has racked up an impressive 600,000+ plays on YouTube. The rapper, who (ironically?) cites both Morrissey and Warren G as influences, has previously opened for Common and Lupe Fiasco; New Yorkers can see for themselves if the buzzy Shad can recreate that Fresh magic in person, when he performs at the CMJ music festival's Canadian Blast showcase on Wednesday.
