Your Weekend Six-Pack: Aug. 27-29, 2010

Ah, the weekend. Two fleeting days to convince yourself you have some measure of control over your life. But planning out activities and amusements is a lot of pressure—which is why we're here to take some of the burden off your shoulders. And we promise not to let your boss know about all that extra shoulder space that could be used for at least eight more job responsibilities.

1. MOVIES

Takers
(Opens Aug. 27th) -
Can Takers join the ranks of Hollywood’s greatest heist movies? We’re curious enough to see for ourselves, especially with a cast that includes The Wire’s former West Baltimore badass Idris Elba and sci-fi stunner Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek). Before you hit up the theater for tickets, get to know the rest of the star-studded cast, watch the trailer, and check out our list of the best onscreen scheme teams to make sure you’re up on your heist history.

2. BLU-RAY

Lost: The Complete Collection
(Released Aug. 24) - “We need to go back, Kate!” a desperate Jack Sheppard once cried way back at the end of season four. Now that the show has bumbled its way to a heaven-bound halt, are you starting to feel that same itch for The Island? Pining for Claire, Kate, and Sun? Fantasizing about a Lost spin-off? Before you follow the doctor’s beaten path and start hitting the bottle, wait! We know a way back—and it doesn’t involve a dead body and a plane crash. The entire Lost experience is now yours for the taking with a Blu-ray collection of all six seasons. Like the show, the extras in this box set will start to make your head spin, i.e.: a Dharma blacklight that will reveal hidden info about the collection itself. Get the full lowdown in this week’s DVD reviews.

3. SPORTS

ESPN RISE High School Football Kick Off
(Aug. 27-29) - Do you have pigskin fever? Gross. But seriously, football season is right around the corner and whether you’re a fan of pro or college, or quite possibly both, you’re no doubt pumped for the start of a new season. In the meantime, satisfy your craving with some good old-fashioned high school football. ESPN is kickin’ it Friday Night Lights style this weekend, broadcasting a series of games between 16 of the best teams in the country. So clock in some time on the couch and prep for the season ahead while reliving the glory days.

4. MUSIC

Heineken Inspire Tour (Aug. 27-28, Culver City, Calif.) - The Heineken Inspire Tour is hitting up Los Angeles this weekend with two big headlining bands: The Hold Steady and Rogue Wave. Other performers include the Argentine rock band Babasonicos and rapper Fabolous. The ticket price for this show is pretty unbeatable: donate a minimum of $1 to the organization Life Rolls On to gain entry. So, that’s basically an entire weekend of live music for less than the cost of a beer…brought to you by beer. This beverage can do no wrong.

5. MOVIES

Avatar Re-release (Opens Aug. 27) - Big blue aliens are invading your theaters once more with the re-release of James Cameron’s Avatar. Though the new cut of the movie has a meager eight minutes of additional footage, fanboys are bound to flock to theaters with the promise of an extended Na’vi sex scene between Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington’s alien bods. Don’t expect anything too graphic though; Cameron described it as, “more of an alien foreplay scene” (MTV). And thus, the director manages to give blue balls a whole new dimension.

6. SUMMER

Get Wet (It's bikini season) - It’s August. You know what all the girls are really into right now? Bodies of water. Summer is flying by, so don’t miss out on one of your last chances to hit the beach or the pool. Need convincing? Check out our Celebrity Beach Watch blog and/or our Pool Party gallery. Because watching things heat up while you cool down is no feat of science—it’s just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
