Your Weekend Six-Pack: Sept. 3-6

Ah, the weekend. Two fleeting days to convince yourself you have some measure of control over your life. But planning out activities and amusements is a lot of pressure—which is why we're here to take some of the burden off your shoulders. And we promise not to let your boss know about all that extra shoulder space that could be used for at least eight more job responsibilities.

1) MOVIES

The American (Opened Sept. 1) – This thriller follows the path of a veteran hit man, played by George Clooney, on a final mission in Italy. Like Clooney’s one-man firing squad in Up in the Air and one-man clean-up crew in Michael Clayton, he will no doubt excel in playing the part of an “unlikely” hero with some, uh, ethically questionable aspects of his profession. The movie promises dramatic twists and turns and stunning scenery, particularly with European beauties Thekla Reuten and Violante Placido putting the two “ass”-es in this assassin flick.

2) MOVIES

Machete (Opens Sept. 3)Planet Terror director Robert Rodriguez continues his exploitation film kick with Machete, which you may remember as one of the trailers sandwiched in between Rodriguez and Tarantino’s Grindhouse double feature. This killer cast includes Danny Trejo in the title role, Robert De Niro, Steven Seagal, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, and our very own cover girl, Lindsay Lohan. Chock full of sex, drugs, and violence, this flick wears its R-rating on its sleeve, so check it out this weekend if you’re craving some pure entertainment laced with explicit content.

3) SPORTS

College Football (Sept. 2-6) - Yeah, so, we’ve been talking about football for the past three weeks, what with the release of the latest Madden game and then the ESPN RISE High School Kickoff. Looks like we’re the ones with pigskin fever (still gross). But it’s finally game on for all of you college football fans. This Labor Day weekend promises to be an all leather affair, if that’s what you’re into, with face-offs that include Notre Dame vs. Purdue, Louisville vs. Kentucky, Boise State vs. Virginia Tech.

4) SPORTS

U.S. Open (Aug. 30-Sept. 12, Queens, NY) - Whether you watch for the love of the sport, the love of the women playing the sport, or the love of the WAGs dutifully watching their dudes grunting and whacking balls around, tennis is the other sport to tune into this weekend. Unfortunately, WAG Brooklyn Decker, Andy Roddick’s better half and No. 2 on our 2010 Hot 100 List won’t be around—Roddick lost yesterday and took the Open’s sweetest stand candy with him, but there are more WAGs where that came from (please turn to page 38 of the September issue). As for on-the-court action, look no further than our Girls of Wimbledon gallery. Now they’ve landed stateside to decide who will be queen of the Queens court. Can you say, “Love all”?

5) MUSIC

Bumbershoot (Sept. 4-6, Seattle, WA) – This Seattle arts and music festival has a well-rounded line-up of artists storming the stage this weekend, from Drake to Weezer, Mary J. Blidge to Bob Dylan. The festival also hosts a slew of comedic acts; this year, performers include headliner Patton Oswalt, Community’s Donald Glover, and Nick Kroll (aka Bobby Bottleservice). No matter what you’re into, you’ll find something at Bumbershoot that’s music to your ears.

6) BEER

Mass Brewers Summerfest (Sept. 3, Boston, MA) – This Boston beerfest welcomes more than 20 of the state’s brewers and features about 80 kinds of beer. So if you happen to be in the Boston area, let the Mass Brewers Guild take your taste buds on a guided tour of their liquid gold reserve. If you’re looking for a more DIY experience, refer to the Maxim Beer Blog for all kind of recs, from microbrews to tall boys. Either way, toss back a few in celebration of this three day weekend.
