The Phoenix

Star Rating:
7 out of 10

A cup-sized speaker that looks as good as it sounds.

The Pitch: The Phoenix by Beacon is a Bluetooth speaker that can summon the music off your iPhone or iPad with ease.

What It Really Is: As adorable as it is useful. The little device is perfect for impromptu parties at work, or impromptu sex on the beach. According to the company, the wireless speaker lasts for 8 hours on a full charge, and while we didn’t have a stopwatch handy, that seems about right during our test run. The sound quality is decent, though at louder volumes and in large open rooms, it does begin to sound a bit tinny and tiny. But those expecting orchestra-quality sound from a palm-sized speaker are natural born complainers. Connecting it is as easy as tapping a button, and if your MP3 player of choice isn’t Bluetooth-ready, the speaker comes with a line-in port and auxiliary cable. Press-Ready Quote: “This Phoenix soars!” -

Please Touch: The rubbery outside casing has a nice feel to it, and it’s durable enough to take a few hits from the inside of backpack. But for rugged hiking and travel, use the provided case.

Who’s It For: People with offices, people who often worry about accidentally choking themselves on wires.
