I always find myself in the crossfire of Lost office discussions—lousy seating arrangements!—and when I do, I look for the quickest escape. When the Hurleyisms started flying this week, I opened up the first e-mail that I saw, interestingly named "geoDefense Bitches!" I scanned the text and realized that I was lied to: There were no "bitches" from geoDefense in the e-mail. However, there was a download code for the eponymous game from the Apple App Store. Fine, I thought. I'll try it. What do I have to lose?
My thoughts? It's not quite Geometry Wars. It's not quite PixelJunk Monsters. But if they had a bastard baby like all video games do, it'd be this one...for a whole lot cheaper—99 cents!
You're placed in a neon 2-D battlefield with a prearranged track on which enemies travel in waves. Your job is to place turrets with varying powers (i.e. laser, machinegun, etc.) along the enemy's path in the hope of destroying them before they reach the end. It's bright, it's colorful, and you might have seizures while playing it...but it's fun as hell!
My elementary school lunches consisted of peanut butter and glue sandwiches, yet I had no problem getting the basics. But, if it all sounds too strategeryish and complicated, there's a quick tutorial that shows you effective techniques for placing your defenses. You can also play your own music during gameplay and if you happen to get an incoming call, the game will autosave and resume when you're ready to go.
So there you have it folks: At a little more than three cents per level and some pretty intense gaming on-the-go, you really can't go wrong with this retro tower defense game.
