One of my pet peeves about video games is developers attempting to stuff a simulation of a sport into an underpowered handheld console. It doesn't work and, ultimately, yields a mediocre attempt at presenting their flagship game, whether it be Madden or NCAA Basketball, as playable on any platform.

Too bad it's not, at least not for me.

So, when an opportunity came along to play NaturalMotion's new iphone extension of their upcoming football game, I threw up a little. But, Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley convinced this cynic. In fact, it's the most addictive sports game I've played on an iPhone.

Based on a mini-game from Backbreaker, a game being developed for the Xbox 360 and PS3, BF: TA is a solid effort in bringing the essence of football to the small screen. There aren't any playbooks to study or teams to strategize against: Just pick one of the random teams (they're all the same, but different uniforms) and try not to get tackled while racking up the points on your way to the end zone. That's it.

The controls are simple enough too. The game uses the iPhone/iPod Touch's accelerometer for moving your player left and right and onscreen buttons to pull off jukes, spins, and sprints away from oncoming defenders. You'll have to get through wave after wave of them, so it's best to stick to mixing it up, especially during later stages when you're running the gauntlet through eight or nine strategically-placed opponents.

There are two modes to complete, Challenge and Endurance. Challenge is a level-based run through each team, perfect for a quick train ride while Challenge is 50-stage marathon for when your train brakes down one stop away from when you get off. (Yes, the NYC train system and I are in a love-hate relationship.) When you're done with each, you can send your high score directly to your Facebook so you can brag to your Internet friends. We're sure that creepy dude who says he had Philosophy class with you in college and decided to friend you will appreciate that.

Overall, Backbreaker Football: Tackle Alley is a great buy at 99 cents (normal price is $1.99) and a steal compared to the watered-down football experiences you may have had while on-the-go.
