Mortal Kombat on PS Vita

Release Date:
Game Platform:
PS Vita
Star Rating:
8 out of 10

Bone crushing violence, itty bitty package.

The Pitch: New hardware needs killer software to justify gamers taking the plunge. Sony enlisted NetherRealms to bring last year’s killer Mortal Kombat reboot to the new PS Vita...and they added a few new bells and whistles along the way.

What It Really Is: It’s 2011’s Mortal Kombat reboot with most of the extra DLC characters (including Kratos) on your smallest screen. Smartly, the Vita version adds an additional challenge ladder to the game, as well as a few mini-games that show off the touchscreen controls. Yes, for the first time, MK is letting gamers rip out spines with their own hands and it’s wonderful. Mortal Kombat can be completely controlled in the traditional ways - the dual analogs are definitely a boon in this respect - but being able to pull off a fatality or slice up body parts in the new Test Your Slice mode, using just your finger swipes, is ultimately satisfying. We really enjoyed what Warner Bros. and NetherRealms did for the reboot last year so getting an excellent port with some extra features on Vita is an encouraging step towards the survival of Sony’s awesome underdog portable. Ready-Made Press Blurb: Mortal Kombat for Vita brought us back to childhood...mainly because we were locked in a basement until age 12.” -

Fun Fact: Scientists say it only takes 15 psi of pressure to crush a human skull. It only takes a few finger swipes to get that done in Mortal Kombat Vita. Enjoy your new nickname, Skullcrusher.

Who’s It For: Subway riders in need of a portable outlet for their rage should be looking closely here. Nothing says “don’t fuck with me” to a panhandler like the smile on your face when you rip Liu Kang in half from scrotum to scalp.
