The Pitch: Following up 2009’s highly lauded Prototype, Prototype 2 brings back a virus-savaged NYC and all the enemy-absorbing abilities of the original but shifts the focus to a new protagonist, James Heller, for an even deeper plot than before.
What It Really Is: Prototype 2 picks up some time after the events of the original and introduces James Heller, who returns from the war in Afghanistan to find his wife and daughter indirectly slain by Alex Mercer. In a moment of video game irony, Mercer turns Heller into the next human consuming, one-man war machine and off you go on your quest for vengeance. Prototype 2 fills in the few gripes that gamers had about the original. Heller is a deeper character, his story is more cinematic and told in killer cut scenes that look like they were ripped out of a Frank Miller graphic novel. Functionally, the gameplay has gotten a shot in the arm this time around. Heller’s upgrades are more linear, emphasizing all the weapons and abilities a mutating man can have, not just the one you’ve chosen to spend your points to upgrade. Conversely, the open world of NYZ offers more choice than before, allowing Heller to choose missions and side quests that will either progress the storyline or beef up his abilities. We recommend buffing the abilities. It’s like that old proverb, once you’ve ripped a turret off a chopper and used it to mutilate a tank, you don’t go back. We think Sun Tzu said that.

Fun Fact: P2 takes some liberties with the layout of its version of NYC. If you tried driving through the Washington Square Arch like you can in the game, you’re probably gonna have some answering to do.
Special Editions: Prototype 2’s Blackwatch Collector’s edition comes with the typical artbook, soundtrack and a host of other in-game upgrades. Activision took the time to actually manufacture Heller’s kickass leather jacket but it’s not for sale. Luckily, you can win the jacket (and the game. And an Xbox) by entering our Prototype 2 Twitter contest. OFFICIAL RULES HERE.
