Even if you’re just a lowly peon in the real world, you are an omnipotent god in the world of The Sims, running (or ruining) the lives of an entire virtual community of your own creation. You determine the look, personality, possessions, and activities of each simulated suburbanite, who are all then at your mercy from the cradle to the grave. A cutaway perspective lets you peer inside your Sims’ appliance-filled homes—which you also create—as their lives (chaotic, mundane, tragic, or enchanted) unfold under your all-knowing guidance. Tell a lazy Sim to mow the yard, a bachelor Sim to throw a wild hot-tub party, or a hubby Sim to dance with the wife before ordering a pizza and watching TV. Now if we ever come across a “deity wanted” ad in the Sunday classifieds, we’re ready.
