At first, Extermination seems like a vapid supermodelreally gorgeous, but kinda tedious and dumb. But once you get comfortable with the dodgy gameplay and neck-cramping camera angles, the game has a lot going for it. The storyline, a cross between Aliens and The Thing, finds you (a U.S. Marine) sent to a remote military base in the Antarctic to investigate mysterious disappearances. You soon find out that a virus has wiped everyone out, and the place is crawling with nasty creatures (the first ones you run into look like giant silverfish). In addition to the incredibly detailed graphics, the characters and the creatures move much more realistically than is usual with games of this sort. Instead of marching towards you as you rip them apart with machine gun fire, these nasties scuttle and run like real bugs. Its enough to give you the willies.
