The idea of battling enemies shaped like gelatin desserts and exploring environments resembling the paintings in your dentist’s office may sound like a bad acid flashback (or H.R. Pufnstuf rerun), yet it makes for an entertaining role-playing game. Though the mechanics haven’t changed much in this 10th go-round—battle monsters, develop characters, ride giant chickens—it’s dressed up in the most stunning graphics the PS2’s ever produced. And even if androgynous Japanimation heroes aren’t your bag, you’ll get hooked on FFX’s intricate story line, requiring 50-plus hours to complete. So hop on your hen and get ready for one fantastic voyage.
