If the li’l plumber wormed his way into your consciousness as a child, zooming around dozens of strange, cartoony worlds as Nintendo characters in this bazillionth Mario game might hold some nostalgic interest. Sure, the 50, 100, or 150cc karts handle nicely solo, but the head-to-head play is where the mushrooms really kick in—a cooperative mode even lets one guy drive while the passenger pelts rivals with bananas and bombs. And once you learn to handle swapping positions at the tap of a button, you’ll realize that beneath the cuddly, kiddie veneer lurks a fiercely competitive game that’s all about spanking the baby powder off your opponents.
