If you can somehow block out Mortal Kombat’s earlier attempts at spin-offs—namely, Mortal Kombat Mythologies, which was about as well received as a barbed wire colonoscopy—you’ll find that this artery-emptying 3-D adventure returns the franchise to classic fighting form. You play as karate kid Liu Kang or Kung Lao, roaming around the spiked pits and stinking dungeons of Outworld, trying to save earth from that crusty old Shang Tsung. The creators get points for keeping the combos, juggles, air attacks, and instant-kill fatalities, not to mention the chopsocky feel and cameos from familiar faces like Baraka and Reptile. The cornball, Z-movie dialogue is bad, but who needs good lines when you can rip out someone’s spine?
