2K's annual baseballer is akin to reaching into a dish of candy hoping to find some sweets but instead finding a few rocks, twigs, and turds mixed in. In other words, 2K did indeed fix a few things, but in doing so, managed to break a few other things. Fielding and base running are definitely improved—everything is grounded in the right analog stick instead of old-fashioned button-mashing. And your base runners no longer stop running between bases, as they did in last year's version, for some mysterious reason. Despite all the improvements, there are still far too many moments when we roped shots off the left field wall, only to somehow, someway, be thrown out while trying to slide into second base. (Insert sound of us screaming HERE.) Like the Yankees, 2K8 has all the necessary ingredients to be a champion—great graphics, an eclectic soundtrack, a winning tradition—and yet, in the end, all the parts wind up feeling like they're trying too hard to be great. Like that Choker McA-Rod, the game grounds out in the bottom of the ninth with the bases loaded.
