Star Wars Episode 1: Jedi Power Battles

PlayStation
Star Rating:
★★★★
Set aside your hatred of Jar-Jar Binks, the incoherent plot, and the future Darth Vader running around saying “Yippee!” Jedi Power Battles boils down the best parts of The Phantom Menace (namely, Jedi running around chopping shit up with lightsabers) into a fast and furious arcade-style game that’s so fun it’ll remind you of what you always loved about Star Wars.

After selecting one of five Jedi characters (in addition to Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, players can choose Samuel L. Jackson’s Mace Windu and lay some vengeance upon unsuspecting battle droids), you are thrown into one of 10 levels, each one following the chronology of events in the movie. The sound effects are excellent, from the lightsaber slashes to the Yoda chuckle you hear every time you snag a “power-up.” Game play is smooth, with each character having unique “Force Attacks” and various strengths and weaknesses, making you return again and again to try out different moves. Also, there’s rumor of unlockable “hidden characters” like Darth Maul that make it all the more intriguing. Overall, Jedi Power Battles is a great addition to the ever-growing catalogue of Star Wars video games—but excuse us, we’ve got some asses to kick.
