The Gaming Review - Payday 2

Release Date:
Game Platform:
Xbox, PS3, PC
Star Rating:
8 out of 10

Stealing cold, hard cash—and your free time.

The Pitch: Assemble your crew, grab your equipment, and get ready to rob some banks. Payday 2 is all about pulling off the perfect heist and dealing with everything else if you don’t.

What It Really Is: A brilliantly mapped out co-op game with a couple of small shortcomings, Payday 2 does well in carrying the torch that was passed from its predecessor, Payday: The Heist. Where the original laid the groundwork for the seemingly simple cooperation that’s required to pull off a successful robbery, Payday 2 takes that formula much, much further by opening the game up to many more heist scenarios, deeper skill trees to buff your player, new weapons and gadgets to aid you in your burgling, and new law enforcement squads to take down. Payday 2 doesn’t just leave the planning of the heist up to you and your team, it also gives you some original choices in coping when things go awry. Got a little too anxious and whipped out your piece prematurely in front of a bystander? Better hope somebody on your team knows how to tie up hostages. Teammate captured by the pigs? Negotiate with them to trade hostages and get him back. Payday 2 is easily the most realistic heist game we’ve ever seen (not including that time we played hide and seek in Fort Knox). Man, the feds were real dicks about that. Ready-Made Press Blurb:Payday 2 has stolen our hearts!”

Fun Fact: The Payday series is chock full of references to famous heist movies. If you look closely enough you can see bits from The Town, Heat, Inside Man, and others. No word on whether Don Cheadle’s Ocean's 11 English accent made the cut.

Who It’s For: Co-op fanatics are gonna love the emphasis on teamwork that Payday 2 brings to the table. You may talk tactics with your squadmates in Battlefield or COD but they certainly don’t require a dedicated team planning session before jumping into your next match. Payday does. If you have a crew that you like working with, where you each enjoy playing a certain role and specing your player accordingly, this game is tailor-made for you, and it has us excited to see what the guys at Overkill Software will come up with next.
