Saving the world from aliens, one turn at a time.

The Pitch: Reimagining 1994’s UFO: Enemy Unknown in the XCOM universe of strategy games, XCOM: Enemy Unknown isn’t just an update of a classic, but a hopeful reinjection of Turn-Based Strategy games into mainstream hardcore gaming. Do we sound nerdy enough yet..?

What It Really Is: It’s a game that’s best suited for the mouse and keyboard of a PC, but that didn’t stop 2K Games from trying to crack the puzzle of precision controls on a console. It’s a valiant effort that works well enough (there really is no substitute for a mouse and keyboard sometimes, especially when making mouse and keyboard soup) and we give them a lot of credit for putting so much support behind a game/genre that hasn’t seen much love on consoles. The end result of these efforts is a deeply complex, deeply satisfying game of strategy that throws you into a multitude of scenarios and forces you to make sacrifices on your team, as well as on a geo-political scale. The fact that XCOM does all of this in the context of an alien invasion, with a stunning style and more graphical prowess than any Turn-Based Strategy game could ever need, is all just icing on an extremely addictive cake.

Maxim.com Ready-Made Press Blurb: If the ancient Persians had PCs, the game of Kings would be XCOM instead of chess. - Maxim.com

Fun Fact: XCOM: Enemy Unknown is the ninth game in the series and the first one to be made for a console since 1995, when the Playstation first came out (and you were still a virgin).

Who’s It For: Gamers need variety. We’re on the brink of the fall launch of massive titles in the FPS and Action categories, but taking time out from your skirmishes to revisit a classic, thoughtful and methodical game isn’t just fun, it’s a chance to exercise your brain as well as your thumbs. Don’t worry, frenzied firefights will be waiting for you on the other side, as long as you come out of XCOM alive.
