Joss Whedon is the man to whom you owe many of your TV and movie crushes: The Buffy creator made stars of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Morena Baccarin, and Eliza Dushku. Now, with the twisted sci-fi–horror film The Cabin in the Woods, he’s discovered (and uncovered) scream queen Anna Hutchison.

This movie is hilarious, but first and foremost, it’s spill-your-popcorn scary. Was it terrifying to shoot?
One time down in the cellar, there was movement behind me, and I screamed, “Something’s there!” They said, “Anna, that’s the lighting guy. He has to be there.”
Writers Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard (who also directed) have quite the collective résumé: Buffy, Firefly, Lost, Cloverfield. Are you a fan?
Buffy is one of my faves, and I was such a Lost fan. I was filming a period piece when it was on TV, and it was all I would talk about. They were like, “We’re supposed to be doing the 1860s, not Hawaii in 2000.”
You’re from New Zealand. What’s it like there?
New Zealand is just cute. It’s kind of small, so you can do everything in one day. You can go surfing and skiing, and then you can go skydiving.
So do you need a guy with an active lifestyle?
As long as a guy can make me laugh, that’s all I need. I can always go for a run by myself.
You make out with a mounted wolf’s head in the film. Was that nasty?
Everyone knows I like sweets, so they sugarcoated its tongue. And that wolf’s kind of sexy.
