Rachel Nichols
Our Maine squeeze introduces another exotic species to the virgin rain forest.

Behind the model: Growing up outside Augusta, Maine, Rachel was labeled an “undercover nerd” because she enjoyed solving arithmetic problems. Now she’s a junior at Columbia University—majoring in mathematics and economics. “I don’t mind the stereotype of the dumb model,” says Rachel. “I like to be underestimated. It’s fun to walk into a room and challenge people’s preconceptions. They think, ‘She’s a blonde model. What could be less intelligent than that?’ They’re shocked to realize I have a brain.”

The high life: “Everything in Maine closes at midnight, so when I moved to New York, it was a luxury to go to a club and stay until—heaven forbid—2 a.m. Now I’m content hanging out by myself. I have a collection of DVDs and I love microwave popcorn.”

Extra exposure: In addition to ads for Guess? and L’Oréal, Rachel has appeared as a judge on MTV’s Say What? Karaoke.

Tales from the shoot: “It’s glamorous wearing a beautiful bikini in a waterfall. But it was the middle of a jungle. I had to know if there were any snakes around, because I have a huge problem with snakes. And the crew guy told me, ‘Only yellow pythons, and they’re easy to spot.’ Very reassuring.”

Desert island essentials: “A lifetime supply of chocolate-covered strawberries. And some company would be nice.”
