Grub Guide for the Drinking Man: Best Sandwiches

As host of Man V. Food Nation on the Travel Channel, Adam Richman has had the pleasure of eating (and drinking) his way across this great land of ours. So who better to tap for tips on America’s best sandwiches? Dig in.

Dinic’s Roast Pork in Philadelphia, PA
The roast pork with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone is probably my favorite sandwich in the country: it’s rich, nutty, salty, bitter, crunchy. Just the most perfect combination of flavors ever.

Katz’s Delicatessen in New York, NY
Half pastrami, half corned beef on rye, with coleslaw and Russian dressing. It’s not cheap but it’s incredible. The meat is all hand-carved, and the combination is delicious. Plus, the sandwich is so big you’ll get two meals out of it.

Al’s # 1 Italian Beef in Chicago, IL This was the first Italian beef sandwich I had, and I’ve been hooked ever since. The combination of good bread, sweet peppers, spicy gardiniera, lean beef and the juices is just hard to beat.

Slow’s Bar BQ in Detroit, MI
The “Yardbird” here is the single best chicken sandwich ever. In fact, when the Yankees were playing the Tigers recently, I had one sent to my friend Curtis Granderson. He credited that sandwich with the two home runs he hit the next day.

Skipper’s Smoke House in Tampa, FL
The blackened grouper Reuben. I know people say don’t combine fish and cheese, but there’s something about this that makes it work. It’s smoky, spicy, they serve it on marbled rye with thousand island dressing, and it’s like all the great flavor profiles you want from a Reuben, but lighter in your mouth & stomach.

Superior Pho in Cleveland, OH
The banh mi here is surprisingly large, with fresh pork and perfectly pickled vegetables. One of the best Vietnamese sandwiches you will ever have.

The Shed in Ocean Springs, MS
Their barbecue baby back rib sandwich is the BBQ sandwich, but with a thicker, meatier texture with the crunchy outer bits of a rack of ribs. They pull the meat right from the bone, and can serve it with a coleslaw topper. Add an ice cold beer, and it’s absolute perfection.

Ben's Chili Bowl - Washington DC
Chili Half Smoke: A signature spicy, savory, garlicky sausage with a natural casing that has a great snap. Top it all off with Ben's amazing chili and you've got the stuff of legend.
