How To Get In Bull Riding Shape

PBR bull rider Shane Proctor helps get your bod rodeo-ready.

1. Practice Bull Sitting

“Training is dangerous, since you can get hurt and miss the competition. If you’re a beginner, just visualize yourself on the animal and go through the movements in front of a mirror. It looks funny, but get used to it!”

2. Don’t Get So Pumped Up

“I’ll go to the gym once or twice a week for cardio and core work. I’ll do planks and a lot of moves with a medicine ball. Remember, you don’t want a lot of weight up top, so any upper-body exercises should be done in moderation.”

3. Work Your Groin

“Bull riding engages your groin muscles, and one of the best ways to strengthen them is by riding a horse without a saddle, which also teaches you how to move with an animal. If your legs stay tight while you’re on the bull, it wins every time.”

4. Slip Into Some Yoga Pants

“I take two yoga classes a week for flexibility. We’re put in a lot of awkward positions on the bull and when we get thrown off, so you have to be a bit of a gymnast and acrobat. Yoga is great for strengthening your core and working on balance.”
