Italian Invasion

As people across the country celebrate Columbus Day by not going to work, the holiday also has many detractors. It’s the day Italian explorer Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas…and snatched it away from the Native Americans, slaughtering many of them along the way. Here we prefer not to dwell on the negative so let’s commemorate this controversial holiday by taking a look at some Italian ladies whose state-side invasions we’ve welcomed with open arms.

Elisabetta Canalis

Obviously we weren’t paying enough attention to Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo because that's when Elisabetta first hit the big screen. By 2009 she had landed on George Clooney’s radar, dating him for two years before she was relieved of her arm candy services. Like fellow scorned girlfriend Kristin Cavallari, she rebounded in the best possible fashion: by baring her killer body on Dancing With the Stars- how did this woman get eliminated before Nancy Grace?

Monica Bellucci

It's no surprise that this international sex symbol started out as a model. Monica's American film career didn't take off till the early ‘90s but a small role in Bram Stoker’s Dracula was enough to get the public's attention. Since then she’s had numerous starring roles in European and Hollywood productions, including The Matrix Reloaded, The Brothers Grimm, and was really the only reason to sit through The Passion of the Christ where she played Mary Magdalene.

Asia Argento

Born Aria Asia Anna Maria Vittoria Rossa Argento, her father is famed Italian horror film director Dario Argento. Clearly talent runs in the family because Asia won Italy’s version of the Academy Award when she was only nineteen. She began appearing in American movies a few years later, including the action-packed xXx where she played a Russian. Oh, and she’s also written a novel and directed a few movies.

Margherita Missoni

Heiress to the Missoni fashion house, Margherita grew up in the Italian countryside before relocating to New York to study philosophy at Columbia University. Despite the noble effort to demonstrate that rich, attractive people still care about higher education, she ended up leaving Columbia to pursue a career in the entertainment industry and has modeled in several Missoni campaigns.

Eva Riccobono

Modeling since she was fourteen, the blonde Palermo native has built up impressive resume, walking the runways for the world’s top designers, appearing in the 2003 Pirelli Calendar, and posing for Vogue, Elle, and Italian Playboy, So pay attention next time Fashion Week rolls around!
