Movies born from Stephen King's horrifyingly gigantic library of writing have been hit or miss at best, and John Cusack and his exhausting antics in 1408 fall comfortably into the miss category. There's little gore and too many cheesy PG-13 horror clichés for the hard-core horror guyseven in the Director's Cut editionand too many nonsensical plot twists for the casual watcher trying to kill two hours before the game comes on. We're usually fans of alternate endings, but this flick felt like it had 15 endings to begin with, so it was more frustrating than it was satisfying. However, we were happy that we got to relive the moment in the movie when Samuel L. Jackson leans over to the decidedly unscary Cusack and says, "It's an evil fucking room." Oh, Sam, don't you go changin'.
