Wild, diseased lab monkeys are scary as hell—even scarier when their disease locks those exposed into a permanent state of homicidal rage. Poor sap Jim (Cillian Murphy) has to face the effects of this warped pandemic when he awakes from a coma in his now empty hometown of London. Not satisfied with this already chilling portrait of paranoia, director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) drives the story into an even deeper state of dementia that will leave you powerless to unclench your ass cheeks until they roll closing credits. After hooking up with three more survivors (Naomie Harris, Megan Burns, Brendan Gleeson), the uninfected fight off the infected (Tourettes-like body movements, bloodshot eyes, chronic vomiting) in a series of gruesome standoffs on their way to a safe haven discovered over a faint radio broadcast. And that’s when things get interesting. 28 isn’t just frightening, it’s intriguing. The gore will have you squirming, the plot twists will have you second-guessing everyone, and the nightmare sequences will, erm…give you nightmares. You won’t find a more terrifying movie this summer (not counting From Justin to Kelly). Did we mention that there are vomiting murderers?
