30 Rock: Season Two

Release Date:
10/07/2008
Star Rating:
8 out of 10
The Skinny: Liz Lemon (Tiny Fey) continues to herd cats behind the scenes of her sketch comedy show, including flaky star Tracy Jordon (Tracy Morgan), meddling network exec Jack Donaghy (Alec Baldwin), and naive page Kenneth (Jack McBrayer).

The Good: This is, consistently, one of the funniest shows on TV. From the very first episode (where we find out the NBC's summer replacement shows include America's Next Top Pirate, Are You Stronger Than a Dog?, and MILF Island), 30 Rock hasn't missed a beat from Season One. If you're not watching this, get caught up now.

The Bad: Although 30 Rock does handle product integration and cross-promotion better than most shows, sometimes even their "wink wink" stuff gets a little annoying. Is it worse to be directly marketed to, indirectly marketed to, or directly marketed to in the guise of making fun of being directly marketed to? Plus, the writers' strike cut this season a tad short.

Best Gag: In the episode "Ludichristmas," Liz gets a visit from her family (including her father, Dick, played by Buck Henry), which leads to the classic Internet insider gag: "It's just not a Lemon party without old Dick." Just go ahead and Google "Lemon Party."

Best Extra: The set includes a live performance taped at New York's Upright Citizens Brigade Theater during the height of the writers' strike. Watching the cast run through a rough, unpolished version of an episode (with scripts in hand), you realize just how good the writing is.
