The Pitch: A scientist (William Hurt) convinced the human mind can operate on different parallels of existence takes some drugs, gets in a sensory deprivation tank and proves his theory correct.

What It Really Is: A eerie mindfuck with a clever sci-fi premise that devolves into a laughable disaster. Hurt keeps it together as the mad scientist going through a mental and physical metamorphosis while attempting to find out where humans come from. (Not unlike this summer’s Prometheus.) The ultra-trippy visuals provide lots of jolts, but the ending is so abrupt you feel like even the filmmakers got lost and gave up.

Fringe Fans Take Note: The creators of Fringe make no secret of the fact that they were inspired by this movie. If you’re a fan of the show it’s impossible to not pick up on the similarities. Plus, the leading lady is Blair Brown (a.k.a. Nina Sharp), who’s young, hot, gets naked a lot and has hairy armpits.

Does Blu-ray Make a Difference? Yes. While there are no real extras, which sucks since this film has a very interesting and combative history, it’s never looked better. Having seen much lesser versions on VHS, DVD and cable, this is the best it’s ever going to look.
