Atlantis: The Lost Empire follows nerdy explorer Milo Thatch (voiced by Michael J. Fox) and his multiethnic crew on a perilous journey to the famous, fantastic underwater worlda place of bronzed blondes sporting blue tats (imagine Christina Aguilera with slightly more eyeliner) and magic energy crystals. Upon arrival, the outsiders (predictably) throw Atlantis into disarray, virtually destroying the city with their greed, deceit, and fancy guns. Not to spoil the ending, but
the bad guy gets his ass kicked and everybody lives happily ever after.
Impressive CGI-generated effects, hot cartoon chicks, and a blessed absence of Broadway-style song and dance (not to mention Sir Elton John) make Atlantis less a G-for-generic Disney film than a long-overdue reaction to such classic anime films as Akira and Princess Mononoke. Disney still aims to please the wee ones, but the PG rating neednt scare anyone away.
