★★★
In the ultimate battle to see who can spill more slimy green blood, AVP pits two alternate life forms against Sanaa Lathan in this second-rate sequel/spin-off/cash cow. Don't anticipate a flick that lives up to the originals, but there's still enough fake gore in the unrated edition to satiate your need for special effects carnage. The extras trudge deep into the slime with featurettes like "Facehuggers and Eggs," a stomach-turning, behind-the-scenes look at the miracle of alien spawn. On the killing machine side of the fight, "AVP: The Beginning" follows director Paul W.S. Anderson as he traces the evolution of the predator's weapons, covering everything from his shoulder scope guns to razor-lined frisbees. "AVP/VFX" ratchets up the nerd speak, technically breaking down how the crew pieced together the 16-foot alien queen and how computers helped generate the final face-off. Other extras include full-length commentary, storyboard galleries, and, just for good measure, a Sigourny Weaver panty-shot from Alien. (Talk about special features…)
