Rappers and movies weren’t mixing so well when stuff like Leprechaun in the Hood and Ghosts of Mars began pitting Iced-out MCs—i.e., Cube, T—against various ghosts ’n goblins in horrific sci-fi thrillers. In Barbershop, Ice Cube thankfully keeps his feet on terra firma and E.T. out of the story.

The movie is just a bunch of bullshitting scenes at the local barbershop, where workers and regular customers get together to pass the time. The film is at its funniest when this motley crew talks about nothing in particular, but sags somewhat when the civil-rights preaching begins and gets downright strange when haircutting scenes are set to a bumpin’ soundtrack. Any way you look at it, though, Barbershop is short and sweet, and there are plenty of genuine laughs—Ice Cube, Eve, and just about everyone else in the flick has at least one solid one-liner. And once again, Cedric the Entertainer leads the pack, dropping in a random dance scene that has nothing to do with anything. The good days are back for thespian Mr. Cube.
