Tim Burton wraps his warped mind around the modern-day fairy tale, sorting through rabid wolves and flying spiders en route to a touching father-son relationship. But where Big Fish rambles off on tangents and weepy revelations, the DVD unloads a set of five- to ten-minute featurettes on the making of the movie that cut to the chase. The “Character’s Journey” section sits down on set with Ewan McGregor and Danny DeVito to discuss their respective roles, while “Creature Features” reveals the tricks behind the effects team’s menacing villains. Then the Tim Burton overkill begins. “The Filmmakers’ Path” logs the director’s views on fairytales and myths, and an interactive section advertises his résumé via icons that appear during the special features and the movie. But overloaded DVDs don’t always make for entertainment, and by the time we got to the director’s commentary, we were ready for this fishing trip to end.
