To expose the untold story of hip-hop’s fiercest turf war to date, you’ve only one place to go: a smug, half-cocked Brit with an attitude problem and a flair for the overdramatic. Nick Broomfield, who informed us all that Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain, spearheads this exposé that delves into the unsolved murders of the Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac Shakur. His interrogative interview style discourages most of his targets, so it’s only fitting that the DVD’s extras feature a hilarious section devoted entirely to “Failed Interview Attempts.” There’s also the desperately needed addition of more lost Tupac tracks, and, for the dauntless viewer, Suge Knight’s disturbing eulogy of Shakur—straight from prison. Biggie & Tupac has two interesting subjects, one arrogant son-of-a-bitch for a director, and some interesting misinformation (in Biggie’s biography, Sean “Puffy” Coombs is credited) to ruin any semblance of credibility. We can’t wait for Broomfield’s next project—you’d better watch your backs, Cheech and Chong!
