In Buffalo Soldiers, war isn’t all it’s cracked up to be—it’s much more boring. Unlimited gun access takes a back seat to intramural football, drug dealing, and weapon hawking for apathetic soldiers biding their time in 1989 Germany. Joaquin Phoenix heads up the disorderlies until a new sergeant saunters into town and tears shit up with explosive results. Supplements let the movie do most of the work here, with a director’s commentary track lending aimless information and an ordinary peek behind the scenes. At least they pump some life into the IFC’s “Anatomy of a Scene” featurette by chronicling a tank captained by junkies steamrolling through a small German village—and that’s before it blows up a gas station. Remind us again why people ask what war is good for?
