HBO's Emmy-nominated film (we think it got around 3,000 nominations) of how the white man screwed over the Indians, most notably the Sioux tribe in the Dakota territory, is an epic production with a touching story, and the best acting you'll see on TV. (Oh, wait, it's not TV
It's HBO, dumb ass.) The story centers around the U.S. Federal Forces battling the Native Americans in the late 1800s, pushing them off their land and demoralizing them in the process. There are a few compelling story lines, but the most prominent centers around Charles Eastman (Adam Beach), a native Sioux who was assimilated into white society and suffers a major identity crisis. You can tell there's enough material for a miniseries, but we're thankful they kept it at a little more than two hours. We understand they had to cut some corners by shortening it, but this stuff gets depressing after a while. If you already have HBO, and you're not interested in the second-disc packed with extras, you won't need this DVD, because Bury My Heart has been on a perpetual loop since it aired a few months ago. (Seriously, the day we watched this on DVD it aired twice, and that version was in HD.) But those of you who don't have HBO, and that's a lot, considering how weak their programming has become, then it's worth checking out to see what all the fuss is about.
